Photo of the Day: Franz Josef Glacier

Inside an ice cave

Inside an ice cave

Today’s photo comes from inside an ice cave at Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand’s West Coast. This photo was taken all the way back in 2006 on our first trip to New Zealand. We spent 10 days travelling around the South Island and one of the highlights for us was the heli hike we took up on to Franz Josef Glacier. We then hiked across the glacier, and explored inside ice caves which was an incredible experience. Franz Josef’s heli hike features on my Top 5 things to do in New Zealand and Top 10 things to do in New Zealand lists where you can read more about it.

  1. How much did it cost?

    • When we did it back in 2006 it was much cheaper (we caught a good exchange rate between the NZD and the pound), but to do the same trip now prices are around NZD$425 per adult with Helicopter Line.
